How It Works

Standover height is the distance from the ground to the top of the top tube. You need enough clearance to safely straddle the bike when stopped. Road bikes need 2-3 cm minimum, hybrids 5-7 cm, and mountain bikes 8-10+ cm due to rough terrain. Sloping top tubes (common on modern bikes) improve standover even on larger frames. Always measure standover at the lowest point of the top tube, not at the seat tube junction.
