How It Works

Spoke tension is measured in kgf (kilogram-force) or Newtons. Carbon rims have lower maximum tension (100-120 kgf) than alloy (120-150 kgf) to avoid cracking. Rear drive-side spokes are tensioned higher than non-drive-side (ratio depends on dish). Uniformity matters more than absolute tension — if one spoke is 20% lower, it will fatigue and break. A Park Tool TM-1 or DT Swiss tensiometer costs $50-75 and pays for itself quickly. Check tension every 1,000 km or after any impact.
