How It Works
Optimal cadence varies by rider and terrain. Pro road cyclists typically ride at 85-100 rpm. Time trialists may spin 95-105 rpm. Climbing: 70-85 rpm. Sprinting: 110-130 rpm. Higher cadence is easier on muscles but harder on the cardiovascular system. Lower cadence produces more force per stroke but fatigues muscles faster. Research shows most recreational cyclists naturally choose 60-80 rpm but would benefit from training at 85-95 rpm. Chris Froome famously climbs at 100+ rpm.
