How It Works

Power-to-weight ratio (W/kg) is the single most important metric for climbing performance. Pro Tour riders average 5.5-6.5 W/kg for a 20-minute climb. You can improve W/kg by increasing FTP (training) or decreasing weight (diet) — but losing too much weight reduces power. The sweet spot is being as light as possible while maintaining or increasing FTP. A 1 kg weight loss at 4 W/kg is equivalent to gaining 4 watts. Most recreational cyclists are 2.0-3.5 W/kg.
