How It Works

Climbing speed depends primarily on power-to-weight ratio. On steep grades (>6%), aerodynamic drag becomes negligible — it is all about W/kg. VAM (Velocita Ascensionale Media) is vertical meters per hour — pro cyclists sustain 1,400-1,800 m/h. Alpe d Huez (13.8 km, 8.1%) record is about 37 minutes (~6.5 W/kg). For recreational riders, expect 800-1,200 VAM. Pacing is critical on long climbs: start 5-10% below target power and increase if feeling good in the second half.
