How It Works
VO2max is the maximum rate of oxygen consumption during exercise — the gold standard of aerobic fitness. Lab testing is the most accurate method, but field estimates from cycling power are reasonably accurate (+/- 5%). Elite male cyclists: 70-85 mL/kg/min. Elite females: 60-75 mL/kg/min. VO2max declines about 1% per year after age 25, but training can slow this significantly. Genetics determine about 50% of VO2max; the rest is trainable. Regular high-intensity interval training (HIIT) is the fastest way to improve VO2max.
