How It Works

Chain "stretch" is actually pin and roller wear that increases the pitch between links. Replace at 0.5% elongation (0.75% absolute max). A $10-15 chain checker tool saves hundreds in cassette and chainring replacements. Narrower chains (11-12 speed) wear faster because the plates are thinner. Chain waxing can double chain life vs wet lube. In wet/muddy conditions, chains can wear out in 1,500-2,000 km. Running multiple chains in rotation (swap every 500 km) extends cassette life dramatically.
